A mission to support local conservation programs, aid communities,
and
protect biodiversity.

Raw Conservation Adventures evolved from a desire to help protect the biodiversity within Sumatra, by supporting the conservation work of local programs and communities that live in and around the Gunung Leuser National Park in Sumatra, Indonesia.

The Leuser Ecosystem is the only place left on Earth where Sumatran orangutans, elephants, tigers and rhinoceros coexist together in the wild.

Spanning the two provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra, and an incredible 2.6 million hectares, it is the largest rainforest ecosystem conservation area in Southeast Asia.

It is critical that we protect this magical place, and the wildlife that call it home.

Leuser is one of the most biodiverse environments ever described and millions of people depend on this environment for food, water, and livelihoods, but the megafauna within this landscape are critically endangered.

  • Over 85% of the remaining Sumatran orangutans call the Leuser Ecosystem home

  • One of the last viable populations of Sumatran tigers lives here

  • With fewer than 80 individuals left, the Sumatran rhino exists mostly in the Leuser Ecosystem

  • It is one of the few remaining viable habitats left for Sumatran elephants

Raw Conservation Adventures is focused on providing adventurers with meaningful opportunities to support communities and wildlife directly through our programs, working alongside genuine, ethical, and impactful conservation and community projects.

All Raw adventurers leave Sumatra knowing they contributed something meaningful and gained insight into in-situ conservation efforts in Sumatra. You must be prepared to work hard but will be rewarded with extraordinary connections to the magic landscape, wildlife, and people of North Sumatra.

Your field trip guides are all highly experienced professionals who work with wildlife and the projects you will be experiencing. We are excited to be expanding beyond Sumatra, bringing you authentic programs across the globe.

Our field trips and adventures are perfect for professional development of those in the conservation or wildlife industry, or simply for ticking off a bucket list.

Meet our founder

Raw Conservation Adventures was founded by primatologist, zookeeper, and conservationist Amy Robbins, to help protect the Leuser Ecosystem, its precious wildlife, and the communities that surround it.

Amy has dedicated her life to raising awareness for incredible primates such as Sumatran orangutans, through her work at Auckland Zoo, and in situ-conservation work such as the Sumatran Ranger Project and with Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP).

The Leuser Ecosystem was the beginning, and now Raw is expanding to new corners of the globe, with a very special field trip to Laos to help protect and care for precious bear species.

“I’ve had a deep passion for animals ever since I can remember. It’s something I was born with.

It wasn’t long after becoming a zookeeper that I realized the extent of the issues these precious species are facing in their wild habitats and the urgency that we need to act.

I honestly believe that one person can make a difference, but if we bring our collective voices together we can have incredible conservation outcomes.” - Amy
