Why travel with Raw?
-
Raw Conservation Adventures goes beyond just responsible travel—it actively contributes to conservation efforts by working directly with local organizations like the Sumatran Ranger Project and Orangutan Haven.
Our travelers have the opportunity to engage in meaningful projects,, from building enrichment for orangutans, to learning from local conservation leaders.
Your journey with Raw supports a range of projects that benefit both the environment and local communities. These initiatives help protect endangered species, restore natural habitats and provide essential services like education and employment for local residents.
From hands-on conservation, to knowledge sharing, fundraising, and more, your trip helps make a real difference.
-
Protecting ecosystems isn’t just about saving wildlife—it’s also about respecting and supporting the people who have lived alongside these ecosystems for generations.
Many local communities have deep cultural and spiritual connections to the land, and their traditional knowledge plays a crucial role in conservation.
At Raw, we partner with local organisations, guides, and leaders, to acknowledge local experience, contribute directly to local economies, and provide travellers with an authentic experience.
-
The world of eco-tourism and wildlife tours can be a minefield, and it can be hard to know you have found genuinely ethical experiences that don’t exploit the nature we work to protect.
Here at Raw, our animal interactions are always ethical. We are not a tourism conglomerate – we are a collective of passionate and highly qualified conservationists who want to harness the power of eco-tourism to protect natural places.
For example, we will not support elephants posing with tourists, washing, or riding. We very carefully navigate this by only supporting a reputable sanctuary and when we are able to find wild elephants we will observe them from a safe distance, undisturbed, without any impact to them. Your participation in our elephant experience field trip provides support for Sumatran elephant conservation in North Sumatra as well as local livelihoods.
We only use extremely reputable forest guides to find wild orangutans and always observe the IUCN guidelines for responsible primate watching. We maintain a minimum distance from wild or semi-wild orangutans of at least 10 metres and spend no longer than one hour with them. Participating in the orangutan field trips helps support the work of Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme as well as local communities and businesses.
